Handicraft in Suriname

Handcrafting in Suriname

Handicraft in Suriname is a craft that is practiced traditionally. First, this creative form of craft was practiced by the original inhabitants of Suriname, the natives. With the arrival of the Africans and later immigrants from Asia and other parts of the world, the diversity of craft, art and handicraft changed into a veritable mix of different cultural expressions. Still this cultural cocktail is well reflected in today's society. The well-preserved traditions, carvings, jugs, dance, performances, visual arts and other works of art are all rooted in the diversity of different peoples from distant worlds who ever found their homeland in Suriname.

The Suriname Tourism Foundation has recently entered into a partnership with the Suriname Handicraft and Craft Association (SUHANAS). Tourists and other visitors to the TIC can view and purchase the coveted souvenirs, authentic jewelry and other works of art.
